Music and Lyrics

Music and Lyrics (Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, Haley Bennett, Brad Garrett) — I can hear the purists now.  My wife called it “a chick flick of the first order” and, while it is, the experience was most enjoyable.  A little That Thing You Do and a lot Notting Hill, it’s amazing how perfect Hugh Grant is for this kind of part and how well writers can write those throwaway lines that he delivers so well.  Grant plays an aging ex-Pop! star, who never made it beyond his initial fame. His co-lead became a mega-star while he now performs at amusement parks and state fairs.  By happenstance, the biggest rock star this side of Brittany (played by Haley Bennett in her first role ever) loves this retro-guy and invites him to write her a song.  When his manager’s (Garrett) appointed lyricist bombs, he finds out his substitute “plant girl” (a more mature and interesting Drew Barrymore) is a lyrical genius despite her odd personality and predilection toward saying everything she’s thinking.  Under serious deadline pressure to produce the song, they write a tuneful duo the diva adores.  The rest is predictable, but it so enjoyable to watch these two that you get lost in the music and the sitcom.  It isn’t great cinema but it’s a fun romp.
