I Think I Love My Wife

I Think I Love My Wife (Chris Rock, Kerry Washington, Gina Torres, Steve Buscemi) – Below average as a typical chick flick, it’s only marginally better as commentary on marriage and temptation. Comedian/writer/director Chris Rock attempts to tone it down from the irreverent, foul-mouthed stand-up comic and craft a family story of a couple with an ideal life but one that’s devoid of sex.  It takes until the last scene of the movie to resolve that conflict … and not very satisfyingly … but stresses how wonderful life can be without it.  The temptress comes in the form of Nikki, an old girlfriend of his former roommate, who suddenly shows up one day in need of help.  It’s contrived, and you know she wants more.  Of course, he does, too, but just to fill the missing passions in his own life.  While his wife, played by TV regular Gina Torres – is a good mother and is attractive, Nikky (Kerry Washington of Last King of Scotland, Ray, and Save the Last Dance) is drop-dead gorgeous and a fantasy.  And while we want her character to be more than a tease, she really isn’t, and that hurts the film.  The film gets slow in the middle, and you might be tempted to nod off (at least I was), but it picks up a little near the end.  And just when you hope for the big finish, you get a little, predictable finish. This could have been a movie for the whole family but the language is rough in the Rock tradition.  I recommend you pass on this until it hits cable and the video stores, which might be sooner than later.
