He’s Just Not That Into You

He’s Just Not That Into You (Justin Long, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kevin Connolly) – The problem with star-studded, vignette-oriented chick flicks is that the audience is drawn to the actors, not the story.  If the story isn’t strong … and it isn’t here … then you’re left with the feeling that you just watched the latest edition of Entertainment Tonight, not a movie.  He’s Just Not Into You is the story of several couples looking for love in all the right places.  It’s really a vehicle for Gennifer Goodwin (Big Love, Mona Lisa Smile) and Justin Long (the “Mac” guy, Zack and Mary Make a Porno, Live Free or Die Hard, The Dewey Cox Story), the central characters of the story.  She is a girl who doesn’t seem to attract any of the guys she meets.  He runs a bar where all of these characters seem to hang out.  In the meantime, Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck play the devoted and beautiful couple.  They are very much in love but he doesn’t want to get married and she does.  So they break up.  How long do you think that lasts?  Drew Barrymore, who is one of the producers of the film and who was Long’s real-life love until a break-up after this film was done, has what amounts to a cameo.  She, too, has trouble finding love and is perplexed by all of the technology required to keep in touch with potential partners.  Jennifer Connelly makes the oddest career choices I have ever seen.  As beautiful as she is, I am not at all sure she is very talented.  She often plays the character that is hard to like, and that’s true here, too.  The two up-and-comers, Bradley Cooper and Kevin Connolly, play opposite guy interests.  Cooper is the unhappily married husband of the Jennifer Connelly character, who is mad about the Scarlett Johansson character (what is she doing in this movie, for God’s sake?).  Kevin Connolly is a realtor who eventually ends up with the Barrymore character.  In the end, who really cares?  Only see this movie if you want to see beautiful young actors seeking an easy payday.
