Zodiac

Zodiac (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards) —  Based on a true story about a serial killer in the Bay area, Zodiac chronicles the relentless search for the killer by a detective (Mark Ruffalo), newspaper cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a hardened reporter (Robert Downey, Jr.).  The killer is clever and demented, leaving clues that are mostly circular.  He kills, then stops for periods (even years), then starts again.  The investigation goes slowly and is eventually all but abandoned.  Only the cartoonist, who takes the killers’ bent for codes and puzzles as a challenge, never gives up.  He becomes obsessed while the case all but disappears.  In the end, the viewer is left unfulfilled which … after all … is just what Director David Fincher (Panic Room, Fight Club) tries to accomplish.  Some critics loved this movie (based on the real Graysmith’s book) but I had the strong feeling that Fincher was trying to manufacture drama when, in truth, the investigation went on for years with little to no progress.  This is a film to rent when you have lots of time on your hands.
