License to Wed

License to Wed (Robin Williams, Mandy Moore, John Krasinski) -Robin Williams is the funniest person in the world, at least according to me. He is also one of the best actors in America when he’s playing serious, supporting rules (as he did in Good Will Hunting and Awakenings, among others).  His “bread and butter,” however, is light comedy.  And he has done some memorable comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire and The Birdcage.  His talent is showcased best when he combines the two, as he did in Good Morning Vietnam, Moscow on the Hudson, and Dead Poet’s Society.  But he’s getting older; he’s just out of rehab; and the vehicles for older comedians are few and far between.  License to Wed is his second mistaken choice in a row (RV was last year’s effort).  The trailers make this look like a farce, which would have been welcome.  Instead, it’s a TV sitcom with Williams playing a priest (imagine that?) with odd methods to prepare engaged couples for what’s ahead.  Father Frank is said to be a long-time and beloved leader of the congregation, which would probably be a little hard to believe, given his unconventional methods.  For reasons the audience can’t possibly fathom, the bride (played by 23-year-old Many Moore, who looks 10 years older here due to a terrible make-up job) forces her betrothed (played by John Krasinski of TV’s The Office) to go through Father Frank’s class.  From here on out, the entire audience knows just what’s ahead – boy loves girl, girl loves boy, priest gets in the way, boy loses girl, girl loses boy, couple realizes they can’t live without each other, priest is vindicated, blah, blah, blah.  The only think that could have saved this movie was allowing Williams to improvise … a lot.  He barely does, and instead you get a boring almost-comedy that underutilizes its talent. Shame on director Ken Kwapis (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants)! This was inevitable given Kwapis’ strong TV credentials, including The Office, Malcolm in the Middle and The Bernie Mac Show).  People just aren’t going to pay money to watch what they can get on TV and cable every week.  Save your money and wait till you can swatch this one for free.
