The Kingdom

The Kingdom (Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman) – I had expectations for this timely film about a well-orchestrated terrorist attack on Americans in Saudi Arabia.  For an hour, as I struggled to stay awake, I was convinced this was a much over-hyped film with a top cast and director.  Fortunately, the last half hour or so is thrilling, tense, and poignant.  Jamie Foxx plays the leader of an FBI investigative unit that goes to The Kingdom to investigate against the desires of the Saudis and the State Department.  But through some pull and moxie, they go, befriend the initially skeptical Saudi police liaison, and unravel the mystery of who led the orchestrated attack.  Jennifer Garner provided the obligatory brave, but vulnerable, female investigator not much wanted in conservative Saudi Arabia.  Jason Bateman is the comic relief and reluctant investigator who is subjected to the most peril.  And Chris Cooper is the gritty, solid veteran whose investigative skills solve the crime.  All of the performances are good, if not enthusiastic until the end.   This is worth seeing, but don’t eat a big meal before it or you might not stay awake for the thrilling conclusion.
