An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth (Al Gore, documentary) — A promising film became a global warming lecture by a practiced, political Al Gore in this documentary that puts to bed many of the myths about this topic.  Yes, global warming is real.  Yes, the issue is political, too.  Yes, it is a time bomb ticking away at the heart of our planet.  As a documentary, this film works its magic primarily when it leaves the lecture Gore has admittedly given over 1,000 times and shows us real footage, frightening scenes, and pictures from outer space.  The worst part is when Gore goes political on us, not because he fails to have a point, but because it devalues the very crisis he’s trying to alert us to.  He doesn’t have to blame Bush I or Bush II for a problem hundreds of years in the making, but he does, even though the hard evidence is clear about the effects of burning fossil fuels, the influence of the auto companies, and the greedy needs of the oil industry.  While not nearly as partisan as any Michael Moore docu-ganda, Truth attempts to mobilize the masses about an issue we can influence, however marginally, today.  It is worth having your eyes opened as long as you ignore the hyperbole and the potential that Gore is looking for a political resurrection.
