Did You Hear About the Morgans

Did You Hear About the Morgans? (Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen, Wilford Brimley) – Hugh Grant has always been one of my favorite comedic actors.  He has a style and an ability to deliver casual comedic lines that are unparalleled.  That had made him a constant presence on the silver screen and a truly bankable star.  He has teamed up with writer/director Marc Lawrence on three films (Two Weeks (sic) Notice and Music and Lyrics being the others) that have been critical failures and modest box office hits. Did You Hear About The Morgans? likely won’t be.   He plays Paul Morgan, a successful lawyer.  Perpetually untalented Sarah Jessica Parker (who ought to stick to TV) plays his wife, Meryl, an exceptional real estate agent.  They are separated due to Paul’s infidelity, and he desperately wants her back.  Everything in this movie has been done before, starting with the couple witnessing an unlikely crime and being placed into the witness protection program in the middle of nowhere to the re-invigoration of their marriage among the common folk.  They get lost in the wilderness of Ray, Wyoming (but the film was shot in New Mexico, which apparently is not remote enough for Lawrence).  How original!  Paul is confronted with a bear … really.  How original!  The couple protecting them, Clay (Sam Elliott) and Emma (Mary Steenburgen), are frontier lawmen and dairy farmers in Ray.  They are the best part of the movie.  There are a few funny moments in the film but there is little tension as the bad guy goes after Paul and Meryl.  And there is no chemistry between the leads. You never believe they ever loved each other.  This is just a chick flick released as counter-programming to Avatar, the kid’s flicks, and the high quality movies of the holiday season.  That bad decision will mean that it will sink at the box office, relegating it to video heaven soon.
