Bedtime Stories

Bedtime Stories (Adam Sandler, Keri Russell, Courtney Cox, Guy Pearce) – Don’t be fooled.  This is a Disney movie – a kid’s flick.  It’s not meant to be a broad-based family film that appeals to kids but has adult dialogue and situations.  It’s just a movie for kids, complete with fantasy stories and lots of kids.  It could have been animated but then you wouldn’t get to enjoy Adam Sandler and Keri Russell just playing it straight for the sake of entertainment.  Truly, Skeeter (Sandler’s character) is an underachiever whose dream is to follow in his dad’s footsteps and run a hotel; but, for now, is the maintenance guy.  His sister (played by Courtney Cox) is a principal who gets laid off and goes away for a week to find a new job, asking Skeeter to take care of the kids at night while her friend, Jill (Russell), is in charge by day.  Yes, there is a relationship that brews but it doesn’t overwhelm the film.  Skeeter is good at making up bedtime stories just like his dad did, and the kids love it.  They add their plot twists, which end up playing out in Skeeter’s real life.  It’s Jumangi meets Cinderella.  The rest is just fun with a little plot about the competition between Skeeter and his obnoxious boss (Guy Pearce) to move things along.  Give Sandler credit; he tries anything.  And Russell is the cutest star this side of Amy Adams.  If you have kids, this is a fun day out.  If not, it’s really not worth your money.
