You Don’t Mess With the Zohan

You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Lanie Kazan) — Career regression is rarely a good thing.  Adam Sandler has more money than he will ever use so he doesn’t need to do this schlock.  Great screen comedians assiduously avoid going back in time.  This is stupid and gross and tries to deliver a message amidst ridiculous premises and ludicrous characters. This is god-awful.  Oh, it’s entertaining enough because Adam Sandler and his usual Saturday Night Live cast-offs (most notably, Rob Schneider and Kevin Nealon) show up. Zohan is Israel’s most lethal killing machine who longs to be a Paul Mitchell hair stylist (spare me!).  He Arab arch-enemy is the Phantom (played by John Turturro, the best actor in the film).  Zohan fakes his own death at the hands of the Phantom to pursue his dream in New York while Phantom starts a restaurant chain (oh God!).  It’s one of those sophomoric grunge comedies aimed at teens with Judd Apitow’s name attached.  Sandler has the same problem as Jim Carrey.  Their fans like them in their all-out comedies, not in the films that show they are fine actors.  For Sandler, it has been Reign on MeClick, and Punch Drunk Love, all impressive efforts.  For Carrey, it was Cable GuyThe Truman Show, and Man on the Moon.  But, in Carrey’s case, he never returned to Ace Ventura.  He went to Liar, Liar and Bruce Almighty, both sophisticated adult comedies.  Sandler makes a career blunder here and he better be careful.  Career oblivion is not that distant a destination if he keeps it up.
