Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe (Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz) – Should you see this movie?  Definitely, maybe.  That’s the same answer Will Hayes (Reynolds) gets from April (Isla Fisher) when he asks her to marry him in his mock proposal to Emily (Elizabeth Banks).  Confused?  I’ll take you back.  Likable Reynolds plays a political science major who volunteers for the Clinton campaign back in 1992, leaving his girlfriend (Banks) behind of a few months working for Bill the Flawed.  He starts as a go-for, where he meets April, who is a paid staffer working the office doing clerical tasks despite her obvious intelligence.  He gets his chance, proves he can raise money, and sees his candidate get elected.  We then get to watch his life over the next several years, mostly through the women he loves, leaves, and loses.  It’s all told in a retrospective as he’s talking to his daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin of Little Miss Sunshine), who is devastated by the fact that dad is getting divorced.  She wants to know about his life so he launches into this tale about three women – Emily, April, and Summer (Rachel Weisz).  He changes the names so she doesn’t know which one is her mom, a game she wants to play, at least so she thinks.  It’s all from the romantic comedy formula, complete with the kid who’s too smart for her age, a bunch of improbabilities, things that could never happen, and a satisfying ending.  I was one of about five men to see the movie but that doesn’t mean it’s a pure CF.  It has some redeeming moments if you just want a light evening of entertaining.
