For Your Consideration

For Your Consideration (Eugene Levy, Harry Shearer, Catherine O’Hara, Christopher Guest, Fred Willard, Parker Posey, Jane Lynch, Bob Balaban) – If you’re a fan of the troupe that brought us A Mighty Wind and Best of Show, you’ll love this quirky ensemble about a group of actors, writers, and TV personalities filming the movie, “Home for Purim” (later renamed “Home for Thanksgiving” to make it “less Jewish”).  There are moments of the brilliance that writers Chris Guest and Eugene Levy bring to us through their SCTV, Saturday Night Live, and Second City regulars.  It’s a potpourri of familiar actors who filming what would surely be an awful movie, with O’Hara and Shearer playing the leads and Posey playing the femme fatale.  There’s a lot of Hollywood inside jokes, and it sure helps to understand a little Yiddish.  But if you expect to guffaw, you won’t.  And if you expect a “big ending,” you won’t find it.  It’s just a story of “has beens” and “never weres” told in an outlandish story that features all of the usual features of Guest and Levy.  If you like the writing duo, you’ll enjoy the movie and, if not, just skip it.
