Stranger than Fiction

Stranger than Fiction (Will Farrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah) – For one scene, I saw Will Farrell really act, not just entertain, and it convinced me that he’s more than just a clown.  That he was in the company of two of the great actors of our times, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, was tribute enough to Farrell’s box office appeal.  Together, you would think this made for a really good movie. It didn’t.  It gave us an interesting plot device – a “blocked” novelist with a character who turns out to be a real man that she can’t figure out how to kill.  One ridiculous plot twist leads to another and the two finally meet, aided by an overworked, quirky English professor (Hoffman).  How the author’s story could become the “great American novel” only through the death of the IRS-agent character, Harry Crick (played by Farrell), is way beyond me, but that’s what Hoffman believes and what the author’s final draft does.  But is it how the story ends? Is it comedy or tragedy?  Is this a Will Farrell movie or an Emma Thompson Shakespearean play?  That’s up to you to find out if you’re intrigued enough.
